Have you ever wanted to learn how to hand spin animal or vegetable fibers?   Have you ever wanted to design your own yarn for a project?  If yes, this class is for you and is focused on the basics of hand spinning.   We will cover the types of yarn, how different fibers impact the products you can make, understanding twist, staple length, & drafting as well as practicing hand spinning on a drop spindle.  For this class, we will be spinning with merino wool roving.   Merino is easier to learn on and once you have the basics down you can move on to additional animal fibers.  Rob will also demonstrate how roving is made from raw fleece and will also demonstrate spinning on a wheel. We will be working with the Schacht Hi-Lo Drop Spindle that is designed to be more versatile and beginner friendly.   Merino Wool Roving will be available for purchase. 

About the Instructor – Rob Shepherd

Rob is the co-owner of Rolling Rock Ranch Alpacas. Rob has been involved with fiber arts since his childhood. He is currently a hand spinner, dyer, weaver, knitter and crocheter.   He has been raising alpacas with his partner for the last 12+ years. He teaches both hand spinning and fiber dying and is currently doing a lot of knitting.

Sarah Schira’s Professor Gortabello Fungi is an adorable stuffie that is so collectable and great for gift giving too! This is a perfect project for adventurous, intermediate knitters to learn new skills in a small project. Basic knitting skills are required: Knit stitch, Purl stitch, cast on & bind off. This is a perfect first project to master the fundamental stitches of crochet and build your crochet knowledge. In this three-session class, you will learn how to read a basic crochet pattern, how to hold your hook and yarn, the chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet stitches. You will be making a scarf to practice these stitches, which develops muscle memory. Plus, you will be taught tips and tricks to keep your crochet stitches straight and looking great.

I absolutely adore cats, and like a lot of us knitters you’ll be smitten too! These super cute color work, fingerless mitts come in three sizes based on hand circumference: 6 1/2”, 7 3/4”, 8 3/4”. They are knitted from the cuff upwards. Worked in the round with magic loop or DPN’s, your choice? Basic knitting skills are required: Must know how to cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch, & bind off. You will learn stranded color work, M1L, K2tog. This is an excellent opportunity to use those mini skeins you’ve been saving for something special. Also have a great selection of mini skeins in the shop! So, come join in the fun and knit your own set of kitten mitts.
